It's things like this that give American people a stereotypically dumb aura...

Things like the forum replies, or like "Will it blend?"?

The "Will it blend?"-series is pure genius. It is not some random Joe smashing stuff, it is a for-profit company spending very few dollars and getting extremely wide coverage.

CDMA is owned by Qualcomm so everytime someone makes a cdma compliant handset qualcomm gets a portion of the profit. WCDM/UMTS is not owned by Qualcomm so more profits for the handset makers. Profit usually wins out over quality.

W-CDMA uses a CDMA air interface, which is covered by Qualcomm patents, so yeah, they profit from the sale of FOMA and UMTS phones (both standards use W-CDMA) as well as IS-95/IS-2000 (Verizon and Sprint) phones.

it's funny how people say it's just a phone. It's not that its just a phone its the PRINCIPAL of it.

It's like a store owner who catches someone who steals a canned good that costs .98 cents. Most store owners would prosecute that person to send a message.

Same thing with the iphone. Is it okay because it's just a phone that a trade secret should compromised? Obviously some people on this board don't understand how competitive the industry is.

And as for this hurting Apple i doubt it really makes apple look like "The man" Maybe some geeks will feel that way or some people who want a reason to dislike apple.

But Apples sales are still at an all time high. The AAPL stock is high so im getting a great return. And i wouldn't compare Apple to some Orwellian creation.

A Company that is attempting to protect it's intrests is not evil. However a person who profits from Theft by monetary gain or in this case a Journalistic scoop is evil. Gizmodo is Reaping what it Sowed.

If there are any issues, they have been so minute as to be unnoticeable.

Thanks. I still think this is much to do about nothing as there is much more sensitive and personal info on our phones and computers... but back to the topic at hand.

I like the fact that Apple is addressing this issue. However, it would be nice to hear more about how this data tracking benefits us. What apps and features use it? What % performance increase does it give? What benefit does it give Apple and it's third party partners? I want to see the pros as we seem to have covered the cons with much vigor recently.

Fallacy. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I think it's a fallacy to believe that apple will reduce the desirability of their hardware products, on which they make a ton of money, in order to spur sales of content, on which they break even.

Maybe fallacy is not the correct word. Apologies, since English isn't my first language (although I don't think it's incorrect usage either). But the point is simple. There is literally no reason to believe apple would skimp on user experience in order to sell more songs on iTunes.

I love it, I imagine someday Apple will build something like this into the OS for all applications to use. Awesome.

    The sad thing is this:

Apple had a HUGE tech advantage with their touch-screen iOS software. They were light-years ahead of the competition when the original iPhone debuted. They could've licensed the software with some decently strict quality controls (screens must be X size, processor must be X fast, etc.) and stomped the market while Android was still an idea in some moron's head at Google.

They could've been Microsoft for the new-era: iOS on every Phone, iOS on every tablet, etc.

And they made the same, stupid mistake as they did in the 80s: they picked device profitability over software profitability. They've locked themselves into a cycle where they need to constantly hit their hardware revisions out of the ballpark, both in specs and aesthetics, to keep pace.

Now that The Social Network has cemented the idea that biopics don't require the main subject to be deceased, maybe we'll get a Steve Jobs/Apple movie that also covers the post-Pirates-Of-Silicon-Valley era. With an actual budget and acclaimed writers, director and cast! I'm being half tongue-in-cheek, but the geek in me would drool over this. Although, being an optimist, I think there is a lot more fodder to come with Apple and Jobs! Why not interview him in depth now and until his, hopefully a long time from now, passing, and then have the whole story. I guess because he and Apple are peaking.

I would LOVE to see a movie on how he was fired and then he came back, and how the iPod revolutionalized everything...to see all the inner workings of all those deals....behind closed fdoors.

I like the part of the law that gives fines, and I think jail time to anyone forcing a woman to wear one, but if someone actually wants to wear a veil they should be allowed to do it.

"She wants wearing it, right? RIGHT?!?!"

They should have add Wi-Fi, up the 400 Model to HDMI, 120GB Harddrive, then give the core 20Gb harddrive and Wi-Fi, and no HDMI. None of this werid 3rd SKU...still better then no Xbox 360 improvement, plus the kept the low end so I can buy what I want.

In fact, I defy you name any type of beer that is better to drink, afterward.

Any decent lager, ice cold, is a treat after strenuous excercise in the heat. Budweiser is not a decent lager though. ;-)

    Concerns about cost aside...

Is anyone else looking forward to how people hack this into being a peripheral for interfacing with computers? After seeing the Wiimote multitouch demo (http://www.ted.com/talks/johnny_lee_demos_wii_remote_hacks.html) at TED, I've got my hopes.

I think this will have a profound effect on robotics. There's a sensor that does the same type of ranging like it now, but it's like $9000. It's called the Swiss Ranger (http://www.acroname.com/robotics/parts/c_Sensors.html). For electronics projects, this is pretty damn expensive, especially for small scale research at the university levels and hobbyists. But like the Wii, reverse engineering a mass produced item might bring about some interesting things.

I guess that's how it goes sometimes. Technology becomes "practical" when there's a consumer application and you can apply economies of scale.

That's important if you're an investor. or employee. As a consumer - who cares how much money a company makes. It's not about their profit, it's about their products.

I can agree with that. But rmwebs said that Steve should resign. Steve works for the share holders, and they do care about the profits.

Stating that Steve should resign because he steered the company into new markets which make Apple 2-3 times as much as before is just ridiculous IMHO.

One thing you have to know is that IT people that work in schools are most likely political appointees, they know nothing and are worth nothing.

Make sure you get your laptop back.

Appointee...??? What are you talking about, it's not a position of office!!

Fact is in most places they probably get paid more than the teachers!

I haven't seen anything, but I could have missed it. January 30th is a Tuesday, so it is possible an event could be held that day.
It's also Vista's release date, which makes it a prime target for some thunder-stealing. Though judging from a lot of threads here lately, it seems that Apple the Irreverent is now seen by lots of people as Apple the Arrogant (one of the ugly consequences of lots of new Mac owners). The line between offensive and inoffensive is thinner than good pastrami these days; no one has a sense of humor anymore.
